Emmy Reactions – 2011

23 Sep

A bit late, I know, but it’s been a busy week. I wanted to comment on the Emmys, the biggest night in American Television.

Mad Men and Modern Family got the most awards, with the former getting its fourth consecutive award for Outstanding Drama Series (winning for every single season) and the latter earning its second, and consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series.

I was pleased to see the wonderful Downton Abbey take home four awards including Outstanding TV Movie or Miniseries. I didn’t think it qualified for that category seeing as it has come back for a second season but I’m still glad it won! Fellow Brit, Kate Winslet won an Emmy for the titular role of Mildred Pierce in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie

Melissa McCarthy was the shock of the night winning Outstanding Actress in a Comedy for her new show Mike and Molly. She was very emotional when she accepted the award and it was one of the highlights of the show. I have to say, I’m a fan of her work including Gilmore Girls, Bridesmaids and Curb Your Enthusiasm. I haven’t seen much of Mike and Molly but I’m going to check it out!

Julianna Margulies won Outstanding Actress in a Drama for her CBS legal drama The Good Wife. It’s an OK show but it can get repetitive and can drag on but a decent weekly watch.

Modern Family earned two acting awards with Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell winning for supporting roles in the comedy categories. I love Modern Family and they thoroughly deserved the award. It seems that the cast will be rotating as to who wins the award each year.

The next big comedy shocker was Steve Carell not winning for The Office. After being nominated for six out of seven seasons (one of which was a carbon copy of the original British version) everyone expected him to take home this one, especially as it was his last season. Still no Emmy on that shelf. I love The Office and I’m a bit disappointed that Jim Parsons won it instead for his sitcom The Big Bang Theory.

Still to this day Mad Men has not won a single acting Emmy. Kyle Chandler won Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Friday Night Lights, which I’ve never seen, and fellow Mad Men nominees also lost out. It’s a good show and I think the time will come for them to sweep the acting categories. Surprisingly, they only got one Emmy this year, being beaten by Martin Scorsese in the directing category for the HBO series Boardwalk Empire and Friday Night Lights took home the writing category. I think winning four consecutive drama series Emmys is enough to be proud of!

Overall, I think it was a better show than last years. There were more surprises, a bigger variety, and Jane Lynch did a great job of hosting.

Oh I’m so happy Melissa McCarthy won an award! She deserves to be recognised!
I loved her in Gilmore Girls and Life As We Know It but I’ve still not seen Bridesmaids, unfortunately…

Same! She’s a really funny woman and she’s getting big now. She’s going to host an episode of SNL, she’s got a movie with Paul Rudd coming out, and she’s written a TV pilot. Gilmore Girls is one of the best shows of all time! She was the only thing that was good about the deeply horrible Life As We Know It and Bridesmaids is a hilarious movie!

Aah is she? See I only knew about her working on Mike and Molly but that’s great that she’s doing more stuff! I reckon she’ll make a good pair with Paul Rudd.

Gilmore Girls is amazing! Aw you didnt enjoy Life As We Know It? I really liked it, personally. Yeah, so everyone says! Which makes me even more frustrated that I havent seen it! 😛

I started watching “Mike and Molly” after Melissa McCarthy won. I have to say that it’s very very funny! She’s absolutely hysterical and a great actress; I highly recommend watching it!

I was personally surprised that “Game of Thrones” didn’t win more awards. I was happy that Peter Dinklage won best supporting actor for a drama series but I was hoping for more awards for “Game of Thrones”.

Hollywood has such a screwy calendar that _Boardwalk Empire_ was nominated a second time, no?, when it was only in its first season. Strange. Great write up! Check out mine.

      Thanks for the comment!

I couldn’t get into Boardwalk Empire. It’s incredibly well directed, but that’s about it really.
